How To Start Labor

I’ve Induced Labor Twice Successfully
Let Me Tell You How

I know what it is like waiting for you baby to get born. When I was pregnant with my first child I was so anxious and keen on learning how to start labor that I literally spent weeks online to prepare myself. It was a good thing as the due date came and went by without nothing happeing!

So I started using all those ways to induce labor I had learned and read about. I ate spicy foods, I went for walk and we had sex. For two days nothing happended so I decided to read about using castor oil to induce labor. I didn’t like the side effects but on the same page I was told about Acupressure.

Learning that acupressure has a documented success in over 80% of cases (scientific research) I decided to try. So I got myself an acupressure manual and tried this method I had never heard about. Did it work? Well I don’t know if it was just time but my baby girl was born the morning after, 3 days past the due date in August 2009.

My Second Child Using Acupressure To Induce Labor

I was a little more clever with my second child (born in June 2011) as I had then learned about the high success rate of acupressure. I tried that out the day before the due date. It was quite amazing as I went into labor around 10 o’clock that evening, got to the hospital 15 minutes past midnight (on the due date) and my beautiful baby boy was born an hour later! Was he in a hurry or what? Or maby just punctual :) anayway it was a great experience and I did not use any medication what so ever (same as with my first child).

What was remarkable about both labors is how quickly they happened (thanks to acupressure). The first time around I arrived at the hospital at 4:30 AM and our girl was born at 8:03 – and when I had the boy it took even less time. I started feeling contractions at 10:30 pm, I was signed in at the hospital at 00:15 and I gave birth to my beautiful boy at 1:15 am. Quite amazing!

There Are Other Ways To Induce Labor Naturally

Acupressure is of course not the only way to go and I sure have read about plenty of other ways. I want to share my knowledge and experience with you so that you can learn how to start labor should you need it.

Before I start telling you about the many ways on how to start labor I want to make sure to tell you that you should NEVER induce labor unless you have discussed it with your doctor or midwife. I know how hard it is to wait, I have two children on my own, but the health of the baby is more important than getting it out to play!

Now that I’m done with the formalities, let’s discuss various ways to start labor.

There are quite a few know methods to induce labor, some I think are urban legends but others have been researched and are proven methods.

I will explain every method here on this page but I first I want to explain why you should want the labor to start naturally, either by itself or by you inducing the labor.

Here are the most common ways to induce labor

Sexual stimulation

I don’t really care if this method is an urban legend or not because it’s fun. Surfing the net you will mainly find two variations/explanations on this method
The first is nipple stimulation. Simply have your spouse stroke and stimulate your nipples. Few things should happend. Your body should relax which helps to prepare for birth. Your milk glands should “get exited” and tell your body that the baby is due. And finally you should get sexually stimulated which can help the cervix to ripen and more prepared for dilation.
The other variation is plain sex. There are prostaglandins in the semen that will ripen the cervix and make your cervix dilate yourself.

Walking and exercise

This one is all about gravity. Depending on your shape and form you can go for a brisk walk or a light jog. This will push your baby downward and open up the cervix. Not really sure if there is any truth to this method but at least you will get some workout. Personally I’m not a fan of this method as I believe that you should be well rested and relaxed as you go into labor.

Castor oil

Let me start saying that I’m against using castor oil to induce labor and I’ll tell you why. Castor oil is a laxative. It stimulates the bowels and can lead to cramps and tightening of the muscles in the intestines. These cramps sometimes spread to the uterus stimulating contractions. It’s simple and it works but… diarrhea will make you tired, it will weaken the muscles you need the most during child birth and it will dehydrate you. It’s a proven method although with low success rate. My recommendation is that you try all the other methods before using castor oil to induce labor.

Spicy foods

This is a famous urban legend. You can find various lists of foods on the internet that supposidly should induce labor. It has not been proven in any way and I personally have my doubts about it. If you like spicy foods then go for it. If there is a change it will mess with your bowel movements I would stay away from this one ;)

Herbs (black and blue cohosh)

Black and blue cohosh has been used for centuries to induce labor naturally. Black Cohosh is used to regulate the contractions and the black Cohosh is used to make the contractions stronger. These herbs can be used seperately or if you want more effect you can use them together.

Acupressure Therapy

Using acupressure to induce labor is probably the most researched methods of them all. It’s basically a massage. Special pressure points in the body are used to induce the labor. Acupressure is best know for it’s help with pain relief but in recent years it’s also been used to ripen the cervix and help with dilation. The success rate of this method is alsy crazy high, over 80%. This was my method of choice during last pregnancy and I’m really glad I did. Just the fact that it reduces the risk of C-section significantly was enough to convince me!

I want to tell you about 3 more natural methods to induce labor that are used by doctors and midwifes.
Rupturing the membranes

This is a very well know method to speed up the labor process. This is a process where the amniotic sac is ruptured. This is also know as “breaking the water”. If this has not happened naturally then the doctor or midwife will do this manually to speed things up.

Prostaglandin gels

The doctor or midwife simply puts this gel inside your vagine to ripen and soften the cervix.

Pitocin

Pitocin is simply a synthetic oxytocin. Oxytocin is a mammalaian hormone that can be used to induce labor. It’s generally referred to as “a natural method to induce labor” but I’m not sure I can agree with that as it is a drug that is pumped in your system through an IV pump. The use of Pitocin can also cause over stimulation in the uterus and longer labor. I therefore have my doubts about using this one.. well.. perhaps as a last resource.

My Personal Recommendation

Now that you have read about how to start labor naturally I want to give you my personal recommendation.

Make sure that you are relaxed if you are going to induce labor. The baby will not come if your body is tense and stressed. There are two great methods on this list that will no only induce labor but also help you relax. These are the sexual stimulation and acupressure.

Light some candles, put a relaxing record on and have your spouce do a mix of acupressure and a sensual, sexual massage. It works wonders. If you don’t have a spouce then simply have a family member to the acupressure part and once relaxed you take a warm bath and do the sexual part yourself.

I should not have to teach you the sexual part but you do need an acupressure manual. You can get one right here: Acupressure manual (you can find testimonials and more info there also)

But how does it work? Acupressure triggers your labor by stimulating contractions, helping your cervix to dilate and getting your baby to descend.

Research shows that labor acupressure significantly shortens the delivery time. Women who use labor acupressure have a delivery time two hour shorter than on average.

Simple labor acupressure techniques give effective labor pain relief, without any risk of stopping your contractions.

Doctors often want to induce labor by using drugs. It’s not something I would recommend and you should always try all other options before turning to drugs as they can have some serious side effects on you baby.

Using acupressure is not only effective but it’s also on of the safest natural methods you can use to induce labor. Not only has the method been used for thousands of years but it has also been proven to be safe by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), among other reputed research institutions.

What is wonderful, is that this method does NOT over stimulate your body or distress your baby, because it just helps your body work better, in an optimal way!
